Istat: inflation is close to 9 per cent, it is foodstuffs that weigh

Preliminary Istat estimates on inflation for September mark another increase that brings the value to 8.9 per cent. Growth on a monthly basis is 0.3 percent. But it is the “shopping cart” that recorded record growth of 11 percent, the highest since July 1983. The numbers show that food has also contributed to push prices. In September, the national consumer price index for the entire community (Nic) – gross of tobacco – recorded an increase of 0.3% on a monthly basis and 8.9% on an annual basis (from + 8.4% of the previous month).

“It is necessary to go back to July 1983 – comments the institute – when the values ​​recorded a trend variation of + 12.2%, to find an increase in the prices of the ‘shopping cart’ – on an annual basis – higher than that of September 2022 (+ 11.1%). This time, in fact, it is not energy goods that explain the new acceleration of inflation, but it is above all food goods (both processed and unprocessed) followed by recreational, cultural and personal care servicesin a context of growing inflationary tensions that are passing through almost all product sectors “.

The ‘core inflation’, net of energy and fresh food, accelerates from + 4.4% to + 5% and that net of energy goods alone from + 5% to + 5.5%. The inflation acquired, on the other hand, for 2022 is equal to + 7.1% for the general index and + 3.6% for the core component.

Data relating to employment in Italy were also disseminated: in August 2022 there was a decrease of 74 thousand employed on July (-0.2 percent) and an increase of 406 thousand units compared to August 2021 (+1.5 percent ). The employment rate then falls, settling at 60%.
