A volley to break every record. The 80th edition of the International BNL of Italy is upon us and is preparing to break every record of the past. “We are here and we have a lot of enthusiasm, we are finishing the last jobs but everything is ready. It’s a great achievement that we managed to get the tournament upgrade,” he stresses Angelo Binaghi, president of Fitp. Compared to past years there will in fact be more players (from 56 to 96), more matches and obviously more match days. In short, a Masters 1000 dressed as a Grand Slam.

“An event for half a million people”

But we were talking about the records. “We have already sold 175,000 tickets, we will reach and exceed the threshold of 300,000 paying spectators. Last year – continues President Binaghi – we earned 16 million from ticket sales alone at the end of the competition, now we are already at 17 and according to our forecasts we will reach 21.5 million. If we count the participation, over the course of the tournament, of all insiders, male and female players, their staff, journalists, suppliers and the forces of order, half a million people will circulate at the Foro Italico”. The total takings are also record-breaking: “The economic impact will create the equivalent of 2,500 full-time jobs. While at a territorial level, for Rome and for the country, the Internationals will generate an induced amount of more than 400 million euros”.

Binaghi: “Sinner, let’s wait for his spark”

During the presentation conference, President Binaghi also announced the wild cards for Italian tennis players: ArnaldiPassaro, Zeppieri, Fognini and Nardi will have direct access to the men’s main draw, while Bellucci, Maestrelli, Cobolli and Gigante must pass the qualifying step. For the women’s main draw, however, the wild cards go to Bronzetti, Errani, Brancaccio, Pigato, Rosatello, Stefanini, Paoletti and Cherubini. Qualifiers are allowed Colmegna, Moratelli, Turati, Chiesa and Urgesi.

Among the big names a lot of waiting for sinneramong the best in the entire circuit at the beginning of 2023. Binaghi sends a message to the South Tyrolean: “Sinner underestimates himself, we could do much more together. The message I give him is that we are storing wood and waiting for his spark to make a big fire”.

Big regret instead for the absence of Matthew Berrettini who, due to the abdominal injury he sustained two weeks ago in Montecarlo, gave up and will not participate in his home tournament.

Berrettini also skips the Internationals: “Difficult to accept”
