Inail, deaths at work rise to 264 in the first 4 months of 2023, three more than 2022 – Corriere.it

The reports of accidents at work presented to Inail from the beginning of the year until the end of April were 187,324 with a drop of 26.4% over the same period in 2022, according to the institute which however explained that the reports of fatal accidents are state 264 with an increase of 1.1%. This is three more than the 261 recorded in the first quarter of 2022, 42 less than in 2021, 16 less than in 2020 and 39 less than in 2019. The reported occupational diseases are also increasing, amounting to 23,869 , up 23.8%.

The increase concerned only industry and services

But we need to read the data in depth. At the national level, Inail underlines, the numbers recorded as at 30 April of each year show for the first four months of 2023, compared to the same period of 2022, a decrease only in the number of fatal cases in transit, which fell from 70 to 57, while those that occurred during work went from 191 to 207. The increase concerned only industry and services (from 219 to 227 complaints), unlike agriculture (which decreased from 31 to 28) and the State Account (from 11 to 9). The territorial analysis shows an increase in the North-West (from 74 to 79 cases), in the Center (from 58 to 60) and in the Islands (from 17 to 20), a decrease in the North-East (from 65 to 60) and in the South (from 47 to 45). Among the regions with the greatest increases are Liguria, Umbria and the Campagna (+6 fatal cases each), while the most evident decreases are those of Puglia (-6), Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.

The causes of non-EU citizens are on the rise

The increase noted in the comparison between the first quarters of 2022 and 2023 is linked only to the male component, underlines Inail, a component whose fatal cases reported have gone from 233 to 243, while for the female component there is a decrease, from 28 to 21. The complaints of Italian workers remained constant (217 in both quarters), those of non-EU citizens were on the increase (from 29 to 39) and those of EU workers decreased (from 15 to 8). An analysis by age group shows increases among the under 29s (from 28 to 36 cases) and among the over 49s (from 133 to 161) and decreases in the 30-49 age range (from 100 to 67). As of April 30 of this year there were three reports of multiple accidents, for a total of six deaths, two of which were road traffic.
