In Sicily, regional councilors raise their salary by 890 euros a month: “There is inflation”

Nothing escapes Sicilian politics. Imagine the increase in the cost of living. It is for this reason that the hall of Palazzo dei Normanni, seat of the oldest parliament in the world, has adopted the necessary precautions: inserting in the folds of the Assembly’s internal budget, the Istat adaptation of deputies’ allowances (that’s what they call the regional councilors in Palermo). We went from 10.4 million last year to 11.2 million in 2023. “The decisive increase in inflation in the past year has led to a remodulation of increased spending”, reads a note from the offices, as to justify himself for the unpopular maneuver. The increase, in the order of 10,700 euros per year per capita, will guarantee each of the seventy Ars parliamentarians – including the governor, Renato Schifani – a gross increase of 890 euros per month.
