Rome and the excavations of Pompeii are closer. To go and visit the remains of the ancient city of Pompeii, starting from the capital, it will take little more than a football match: 1 hour and 47 minutes thanks to the convenience of the new direct train. A first step in a long journey that will lead Italy to be a more modern and functional country, while safeguarding “the landscape and the historical and artistic heritage of the nation”, recalled the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, who defined ” di Sistema» the initiative. And it is thanks to the Ministry of Culture that the realization of this project has been possible. The first trip is scheduled for next Sunday, July 16, when a train will leave the Rome-Termini station at 8.53, stop in Naples Central at 10.03 and arrive at the Pompeii station at 10.40.

The new railway route was presented to the Ministry of Culture during a press conference attended by Minister Sangiuliano, the managing director of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group, Luigi Ferraris, the director general of museums, Massimo Osanna, and the director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel. The connection without changes between the capital and one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world will be carried out with the Frecciarossa 1000, the flagship train of the Trenitalia fleet every third Sunday of the month and will allow travelers and tourists to reach Pompeii from Rome in 1 hour and 47 minutes and to return in the evening in two and a quarter hours. Already during the journey, passengers will be able to learn about the history of ancient Pompeii through a clip that will be broadcast on the on-board monitors. “During the actual journey there will be a virtual journey that will allow us to understand where we are going,” underlined Ferraris. An initiative that has obvious advantages for tourists, even for those who, thanks to short holidays, would not have been able to visit Pompeii for reasons of time. “The advantages of this initiative are obvious: thanks to this initiative, tourists who come to Rome to stay 4 or 5 days who did not have a stop in Pompeii will be able to reach Pompeii in one day and visit it”, explained Sangiuliano.

The timetables

The departure is scheduled in the morning from Roma Termini at 8.53 with a stop in Naples Central at 10.03 and arrival at the Pompei station at 10.40. The Pompei Link shuttle bus awaits travelers heading to the excavations. The return is at 18.40 with a stop at Napoli Centrale at 19.23 and arrival at Roma Termini at 20.55. The new connection will add to the 50 daily round-trip journeys already existing between Rome and Pompeii on Frecciarossa, which provide for arrival at Naples Central Station with the high-speed train and continuation to destination with Trenitalia regional trains from the underlying Piazza Garibaldi station.
