In Monza we will vote again for the seat of the Senate vacant after the death of Berlusconi: elections by the end of October

The Senate Elections Committee today acknowledged that Silvio Berlusconi’s seat in Palazzo Madama remained vacant following the senator’s death. It will therefore now be the Viminale that will have to call the by-elections for the single-member constituency Monza-Brianza (Lombardy 06).

The vote should be held within 90 days, but in this case it could be postponed by a few weeks to avoid it coinciding with the summer months. In all likelihood, therefore, the Monza-Brianza constituency, assigned with the majority system, should return to voting by 29 October. The deadline of the end of October is identified according to the law that regulates supplementary elections (December 20, 1993, n. 533). They are normally called after 90 days “from the date of acknowledgment of the vacancy”, in this case it would be June 13th and the deadline for returning to the polls would be September 15th. However, again according to the law, if the ninety-day deadline falls between 1 August and 15 September, it is possible for the Government to postpone them by another 45 days. Thus we arrive at indicating the date of 29 October as the maximum limit for returning to the polls.

So we go back to voting, but for now, no official names of candidates have arrived from Forza Italia. Certainly this is another knot to be solved on the table of the top management of Fi, starting with the national coordinator, Antonio Tajani. “Let’s imagine if in a moment of pain like this we asked ourselves a problem like this”, the blue vice president of the Senate, Maurizio Gasparri, cut short on the sidelines of the funeral.

In the September 2022 elections, Berlusconi had won with over 50 percent of the preferences against the candidate of the Democratic Party, the councilor of Seregno Federica Perelli who had stopped just above the 27th.
