In January, the national consumer price index for the entire community (NIC), gross of tobacco, is estimated to register an increase of 0.1% on a monthly basis and 10% on an annual basis, from +11.6% in the previous month; the preliminary estimate was +10.1%. This was communicated by Istat, thus limiting the preliminary estimate and emphasizing that in January inflation showed a clear slowdown.

In January, the trend dynamics of food, home and personal care prices eased (from +12.6% to +12.0%), while on the contrary that of frequently purchased products accentuated (+8.5% to +8.9%).

Businesses, bankruptcies and registrations are decreasing

For the total number of business registrations, on the other hand, the last quarter of 2022 closed with an economic decrease of 0.9% and a negative trend picture, down by 10.7% compared to the previous year, for the third consecutive quarter. Istat reports in particular the trend of construction, with a reduction of 24.7% on an annual basis, and of information and communication services (-17.8%). Only in the hotel and restaurant services sector is the number of registrations showing a trend growth, albeit a slowdown (+4.9%), reads a note. Compared to the third quarter of 2022, however, the number of registrations increased in financial, real estate and professional services (+3.5%), in the transport sector (+3.1%) and in the construction sector (+2, 9%). The greatest drops are found in trade (-7.1%), in information and communication services (-4.1%) and in accommodation and restaurant services (-2.6%). As regards bankruptcies, overall, they decreased significantly both compared to the previous quarter (-22.1%) and compared to the same quarter of 2021 (-23.6%).
