In Guatemala the river invaded by plastic and other waste: the images

Immersed in the contaminated water with their hands, they look for the metal to resell. They are the Guatemalans photographed by the reporter Josue Decavele that for Reuters went along the waters of the Las Vacas River in Chinautla, just outside of Guatemala City. There the pollution has reached such levels as to cause an accumulation of rubbish which emerges from the waters and piles up along the banks.

According to the nonprofit’s estimates The Ocean Cleanup they end up there every year 20 thousand tons of waste. The river in this stretch has become an open-air dump, also crossed by animals.

The Las Vacas River is a tributary of the Rio Montaguathe largest river in Guatemala which flows into the Carribean Sea.

Last year Ocean Cleanup installed screens to filter out most of the waste, especially plastic, that ends up in the ocean.
