In Calabria the first train powered by biofuel

Traveled between Sybaris and Reggio Calabria the first train of the FS Italiane Group fed exclusively with Pure HVOa biofuel supplied by Eni Sustainable Mobility which can contribute to the reduction of more than 80% of emissions of CO2eq (calculated along the entire product value chain, based on the raw material used, compared to the reference fossil mix, ed). The first commercial voyage with passengers on board took place in Calabria with the hybrid train Trenitalia Blues.

Carbon neutrality by 2040
The use of biofuels is fully part of this strategy and is part of the broader objectives – outlined by Ferraris himself – of creating an integrated, more sustainable and digital mobility ecosystem, and of achieving carbon neutrality to 2040ten years ahead of the parameters set by Europe.
The train, already more sustainable than other forms of collective and private transport, with the use of biofuel HVO further reduces its impact in terms of CO2 emissions. In this way, the Trenitalia Blues hybrid train, which can already travel on batteries as well as with the pantograph, becomes even more “green” when using biofuel.
The acronym HVO
HVO extension is an acronym that stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil: this biofuel is produced from raw materials of renewable origin (pursuant to EU Directive 2018/2001 the so-called “REDII”) such as waste and residues, it is also able to perform as well as traditional ones, offering equal performance in terms of delivery of power in any type of context.
