Two weeks to observe and defend from poachers the migratory birds of prey and storks which in this period cross the Strait of Messina in large numbers to head towards their nesting areas. But also a lot of training, naturalistic dissemination and citizen involvement with Adorno Day (April 28-30), an event to discover the beauty of the migratory phenomenon, even in the field, and the problems of poaching that still persist on the Calabrian side of the Strait.

Storks boom in Calabria: “Here’s how we brought them back and why it’s important”

Started on Saturday 22nd April to end on 6th May, the field of monitoring and prevention of poaching which Lipu organizes on the Calabrian side of the Strait of Messina in coordination with Legambiente, WWF and Man (Mediterranean Association for Nature).

The activity takes place simultaneously and in collaboration with “Operation Adorno”, coordinated by the Soarda Operational Department of the Cites Carabinieri Group and the “Calabria” Forestry Carabinieri Regional Command to combat poaching of birds of prey.

The volunteers will supervise one of the most important European corridors for bird migration, one of the “black spots” included in the National Anti-Poaching Plan and in which episodes of illegality still occur today. A phenomenon which, although reduced compared to the past, constitutes a serious threat to the safety of tens of thousands of specimens of migrating birds of prey, in particular of the honey buzzard, but also of the other species which pass through the strait such as marsh harrier, black kite, Egyptian vulture, harriers, sparrowhawk, ospreyto which are added the white stork and the black stork.

This year the usual activity of LIPU volunteers in defense of migratory birds of prey, who operate within the Safe flyways project, is joined by the appointment of “Adorno Day”, a three-day event, from 28 to 30 April, with meetings and local events focused precisely on the migration of birds of prey, organized by Lipu and StOrCal (Calabrian ornithological station), with the collaboration of the Municipality of Campo Calabro and the Department of Agriculture of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria.

The land of storks: stories of a friendship that knows no obstacles from Turkey to Calabria

“Almost 50 years after the first historic edition of the Lipu anti-poaching camp on the Calabrian side of the Strait of Messina – declares John Albarella, responsible for Lipu’s Anti-poaching and hunting activities – we launched the new edition with the awareness that even if the phenomenon has significantly reduced, we need to continue to monitor, because even today a hard core of poachers is ready to prosecute their criminal activities. However, this year – continues Albarella – we wanted to broaden the perspective, combining the traditional field with the activities of Adorno Day, which see us in the role of disseminators and trainers, and which represents a precious opportunity to involve the local population, to raise awareness and of knowledge and valorisation of that precious natural heritage represented by migratory birds of prey”.
