Sunday and Monday we vote for the 2023 Municipal elections: in the four capitals war to the last vote, with possible reversals and repercussions on the national political balance

There are 13 capital municipalities called to vote on Sunday and Monday (from 7 to 23 and from 7 to 15) but the real challenge, on a political level, is played out on a much smaller number: 4. When the polls open, the attentions of politicians and observers will focus on four cities: Brescia, Ancona, Vicenza and Siena. The first two are governed by centre-left mayors, the other two by centre-right representatives. Their result weighs on the balance which today sees 8 capitals the prerogative of the centre-right and 5 of the centre-left. Those four cities are considered contestable and can move the weights on the scales that will decide the state of parties and coalitions. But let’s look at the four decisive challenges.

Brescia

In Brescia, governed for ten years by the Democratic Party Emile Del Bono who passed the baton for the race to Palazzo della Loggia to the deputy mayor Laura Castellettithe government majority lined up to close the electoral campaign in support of the Northern League Fabio Rolfi

all national leaders, starting with
Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Salvini

. After having confirmed itself without problems in the Region, the coalition aims to make a philotto line, aligning the Comune della Leonessa with those of the national and regional governments. But on the other hand, the centre-left is counting on continuity to maintain the leadership of one of the most important cities, from an economic point of view but not only, in Lombardy.

The guide to municipal elections on Sunday and Monday

Ancona

The same goes for Ancona, the only regional capital involved in the administrative round, where the centre-left entrusts Ida Simonella the task of carrying on the ten-year work of the outgoing mayor Valeria Mancinelli (Pd), while the center-right (which also in this case governs the Region) relies on the force Daniel Silvetti to conquer the red stronghold.

Vicenza

The reversed perspective if you move to Vicenza, where the Municipality led by Francis Rucco (head of a centre-right coalition) who aims to be confirmed. He has to deal with the dem Giacomo Possamai, which has aggregated five civic lists to the centre-left. The challenger’s goal is to repeat the feat he did a year ago Damiano Tommasi snatched Verona from the center-right to stem the regional excessive power of Luca Zaia.

Siena

Finally, the Siena case. A historically red city, known for the Palio and for the bank that ended in collapse, which five years ago was conquered for the first time, by a few hundred votes, by the centre-right. What now, discarded the outgoing mayor (Louis DeMossi), points to Nicoletta Fabio. The challenge with the all-female centre-left because it is the opponent Anna Ferretti (PD). In Tuscany, also pay attention to Massa, where the center-right now in government of the city is split with Fdi running alone. The risk that the centre-left could take advantage of the rupture.
