Bet on clean energy. It’s the future. There are 14 million new “green jobs” estimated for the next few years at an international level. Jobs will also be created in Italy with the energy transition: the 2030 Plan drawn up by Elettricità Futura provides for 540,000. And one thing is certain: hydrogen will play a role. A future that has already begun, also in terms of professional opportunities. Which today employs, according to the International Energy Agency, more than half of the people employed in the entire sector (there are 65 million globally), but is destined to grow. A lot: 14 million new green jobs estimated in this decade in the “Net zero emissions by 2050” scenario.

The role of hydrogen

Even in Italy new jobs will be created with the energy transition: the 2030 Plan drawn up by the Confindustria association, Elettricità Futura provides for 540,000. And one thing is certain: hydrogen will play a role. Especially in the future: Enea calculates that it could generate from 300 to 500 thousand more jobs by 2050 in our country alone. But already now something is moving. For example, in the automotive sector, the Iveco Group is working on various projects for the development of hydrogen as a fuel for both electric and internal combustion engines, but not only.

The sought-after profiles: from engineers to battery designers

And there is an impact on employment: it is looking for about twenty new figures to be included in 2023 at a global level, including Italy (here it employs 13 thousand people) for the design of fuel cells: engineers, system engineers, battery designers. But it also happens on the railway. Next year (if all goes as planned) the first fully hydrogen-powered passenger train will arrive in our country. Alstom is building it here in Italy (it will supply six to Ferrovie Nord Milano): most of the production takes place in Piedmont at the Savigliano plant, while the traction systems are delivered from Sesto San Giovanni (Milan) and the on-board signaling systems from Bologna.

«We are moving towards the introduction of graduates in engineering, physics and chemistry, because hydrogen has issues related to storage, warehousing and also batteries» says HR Director Marco De Rosa, who between April this year and next March it will make over 400 jobs overall in Italy, where the company already employs 3,600 people. Junior and senior research: mainly electronic, computer, automation and systems, telecommunications, mechanical, aerospace, electrical engineers, graduates in mathematics and physics and graduates of higher technical institutes. Most will go to the area industrialisation and inengineering. “90% will enter immediately with permanent employment – he explains – And a portion of the people employed for the construction and design will also be employed for the development of the hydrogen train”

3Sun will go from 200 to 900 people

Apart from hydrogen, several innovative renewable energy projects are being launched in the country, which are already having an impact on the supply of employment. Enel, for example, in Catania has invested in the 3Sun Gigafactory, a state-of-the-art solar panel factory which, by 2024, will be the largest in Europe. And recruitment in the Etna Valley has already begun: 3Sun, the company that manages the Gigafactory project as part of Enel Green Power, will go from 200 to 900 people. There is room for 550 graduates (mechanics, mechatronics, electrical, electronics, thermotechnics, chemistry and others) residing in Sicily: they will cover technical-operational positions in areas such as production, maintenance, auxiliary services, product quality and plant operation. And the selections of 100 graduates are also underway.

The recruitment of Fincantieri

But Enel is still hiring throughout the peninsula. If you are aiming for renewables, the new Renewable Energy Communities unit of Enel Green Power Italia is looking for some figures to insert. There are also high-tech energy projects in shipbuilding. Fincantieri (10,000 employees in Italy alone), for example, is currently building a new-concept LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion cruise ship in Monfalcone for TUI Cruises: it started last June and will build two by 2026. And if you are looking for employment in the alternative fuels sector, it has eight open positions: select three expert technicians in the management of LNG plants (for Monfalcone, Marghera, Sestri and Ancona) and three LNG project engineers for Trieste, a Buyer of LNG systems and new technologies and a junior analyst of innovative technologies (hydrogen/LNG).

1200 new entries in A2A by 2030

Who are you looking for? Especially high school graduates and graduates in STEM subjects. Select technicians and engineers for the management, planning and evaluation of investments and the permitting of energy production plants and figures specialized in the design and development of biomethane plants. But he will also insert personnel in Waste-to-Energy, E-Mobility and Smart City, and figures such as Innovation project manager, Business analyst and IT Service specialist for research and development, scouting of innovative technologies and management of digital applications.
