The secretary of the Democratic Party contests the executive on several fronts: from the Mes to the choice of the commissioner for the floods to the rate increase decided by the ECB

“I hoped the rate hike would stop, it didn’t happen that way. We need to take into account the economic and social impacts of that rate hike. However, it is curious that this government, a champion of passing the buck, is taking it out on yet another scapegoat – today the ECB, tomorrow who knows who – instead of doing everything necessary to restore purchasing power to people, to support businesses in accessing credit”. Pd secretary Elly Schlein attacks the government on economic policy and targets Prime Minister Meloni’s speech in the Chamber.

«We are launching three proposals: the minimum wage, something we are working on with the other oppositions”; “make the cut in the tax wedge structural, because this cut is temporary, it only lasts until December, and the Democratic Party wants it to become structural”; «an intervention on rents, that is, being able to stop the increase in rents». “These are all things a national government can do. If it’s not doing it, it’s not the ECB’s fault, it’s not someone else’s fault, it’s evidently the fault of this government’s inability to give social responses to Italy which is struggling the most: unemployed, precarious workers, poor workers and that part of the company that today is getting into trouble with respect to that increase in interest rates and doesn’t care about Giorgia Meloni’s jokes against the ECB: they do something about it if the government puts the social partners to bed and finds itself together a way out as proposed by the Democratic Party ».

The dem leader also disputes the timing with which the government has moved on the front of the flood. “They made us waste 50 days on this decision, while waiting for families, businesses and farmers who have lost everything, some of whom have lost everything twice. They made us wait 50 days while they didn’t lift a finger on the resources for 100% refreshments, necessary for those who have lost everything: yesterday the commissioner decided but we still can’t see the money ». As for the commissioner: «Figliuolo will be judged on the basis of how well he will be able to work for Emilia Romagna and for the reconstruction of a land that has a great desire to get back on its feet. However, it is clear that it was a wrong choice on the part of the government not to have wanted to take into account the institutional supply chain, which has always worked well also for post-earthquake reconstruction. This centralization can only be explained by the attempt to politicize this choice, which we had already denounced lately».

Finally, the front Mes. “I’ve never seen an episode where the majority defect a vote in the courtroom on the Mes and leave the opposition alone to vote. This is the sign of their enormous divisions but also of the irresponsibility of this government with respect to international commitments that Italy has already undertaken. Ratifying changes to that treaty does not mean asking for access to that instrument. Keeping twenty countries blocked for ideological reasons and not to tell the truth to the Italians that can be ratified even without using it means being irresponsible and is embarrassing us with international interlocutors. It’s a matter of credibility.”
