Positive January for the retail trade. According to Istat surveys, a cyclical increase is estimated for retail sales of +1.7% in value and +1.2% in volume. In particular, both the sales of food (+2.2% in value and +1.9% in volume) and those of non-food (+1.4% in value and +0.7% in volume) are growing ).
In the quarter November 2022-January 2023, in economic terms, retail sales grew in value (+1.5%) and decreased in volume (-0.5%). Sales of food goods are up in value (+1.7%) and down in volume (-0.8%) as are those of non-food goods (+1.2% in value and -0.2% in volume). «In January 2023, compared to the previous month, retail sales increased both in value and in volume for both product sectors – is the comment that comes from the Institute of Statistics -. On a trend level, however, the trend already highlighted in the last months of 2022 continues; in fact, an increase in sales in value contrasts with a decrease in those in volume. The tendential growth in value characterizes all forms of distribution, in particular large-scale distribution».

On a trend basis, in January 2023, retail sales increased by 6.2% in value and recorded a decrease in volume of 2.4%. A similar trend was recorded both for the sales of food goods (+7.5% in value and -4.4% in volume) and for those of non-food goods (+5.2% in value and -0.9 % by volume). As regards non-food goods, positive trend variations were recorded for all product groups with the exception of pharmaceuticals (-1.4%). The greatest increase concerns Perfumery products, personal care (+10.7%) and Clothing and fur (+9.4%). Compared to January 2022, the value of retail sales is growing for all forms of sales: large-scale distribution (+8.2%), businesses operating on small surfaces (+4.3%), sales outside shops (+6.1%) and electronic commerce (+3.0 %).
