The stage race that will launch the champions of the future from all over the world is born, organized by Rcs Sport on behalf of the Italian Cycling Federation

Is called Giro Next Gen, was baptized on Wednesday in Rome in the hall of the Council of Ministers. It will (very soon) be the stage race that will launch the champions of the future from all over the world, organized by Rcs Sport on behalf of the Italian Cycling Federation and heir to the historic Tour Baby under 23. The race will start on 11 June from Agli in the province of Turin and will end after eight stages in Trieste, in Piazza Unit d’Italia, on 18 June. The route (1,050 km for a total difference in altitude of 12,050 metres) develops entirely between Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia and starts with an individual time trial of 9.4 kilometres. There are then four stages for sprinters and/or long distance riders, two uphill finishes (the legendary Stelvio from Bormio and Pian Del Cansiglio) and an eventful stage that ends in Manerba del Garda.

At the presentation there was Andrea Abodi, Minister for Sport and Youth. We are starting to make people understand the usefulness of the interdisciplinarity of sport – explained the minister – because now there is the classic Giro d’Italia, the women’s one, just as important and will be more and more so in the future, and the Next Gen one. They represent a piece of national heritage because they tell not only the deeds of cyclists or female cyclists, but also our nation, its charm, its beauties and its riches. The cycling movement is growing as well as its social economy, maybe we will have a few less medals but woe to talk about crisis.

Mauro Vegni, director of the Giro, explained that this year the race will take place entirely in the North because with only eight stages it is impossible to touch the whole boot. Over the next few years we plan to develop the race in central and southern Italy in order to bring this top-level event for the category to all Italian territories, as we already do in professional racing. The course offers opportunities for everyone, time trialists, sprinters, finisseurs and climbers with the icing on the cake represented by the arrival on the Stelvio Pass. 35 formations will be lined up at the start, 17 of which are Italian, but more than 80 have asked us to participate. Unfortunately we had to say no even to big teams and we are sorry.

For Paolo Bellino, CEO of Rcs Sport the organizational machine of the Giro will make a considerable effort which will be further expanded starting from 2024 as we will also add the Giro Donne to the calendar. In the span of 40 days we will therefore have three races that will fully cover the development of the Italian cycling movement. Cordiano Dagnoni, president of the Federciclismo then recalled that there is, in the history of the amateur Giro, an element of continuity and growth that reaches full maturity with the organization by RCS Sport, to whom we thank for accepting this challenge. A thank you that we also address to those who have allowed the Giro U23 in recent years to restart and become what it is today.
