Mozambique has officially started the export of liquefied natural gas produced by Eni in the north of the country. This is the first African offshore production of LNG from vessels operating in ultra-deep waters. The news, very important for the energy security of Europe, was given by Eni itself, which delegated operator of the Coral South project on behalf of its partners in Area 4, the Rovuma basin where Mozambique Rovuma Venture Spa (Mrv) operates, a joint venture set up by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70% stake in the exploration and production concession contract in the area. The other stakeholders in Area 4, in addition to Mrv, are Galp, Kogas and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos EP, each with a 10% stake.

3.4 million tons of liquefied gas per year

Coral South a project of historic significance for the sector and firmly places Mozambique on the world LNG scene. Approved in 2017, it now enters into operation after only 5 years, in line with the timing and costs foreseen in the initial program and despite the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic. With a gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per year (producing LNG from the 450 billion cubic meters of gas in the Coral field), Coral Sul Flng is the first sustainable floating plant for the production of liquefied natural gas ever built to operate in deep water (about 2,000 meters), and the first purpose built for Africa.

Eni: Gas as a source of energy security

This first load represents a new, important step in Eni’s strategy, explains CEO Claudio Descalzi, who leverages gas as a source capable of significantly contributing to European energy security, also through the growing diversification of supplies, while supporting a fair and sustainable energy transition. Descalzi then underlined that Eni will continue to work with partners to ensure timely enhancement of Mozambique’s vast gas resources. The cargo, directed to Europe, should be destined mainly for the market of our continent.
