Italy and Switzerland are increasingly interconnected, after the release of the Swiss government’s funding 67.5 million euros for the construction of the new intermodal terminal of Milano Smistamento: an innovative infrastructure, equipped with technically advanced equipment, essential for the sustainable development of the transport of goods between Italy and Europe, in particular with Switzerland.
The project
The finish line was the focus of the meeting held on Tuesday 18 April in Rome between the top management of the leading companies in the partnership stipulated last October, the FS Group and the operator Hupac which, through the company Teralp (owned by Mercitalia Logistics and Hupac), will start the works. Milano Smistamento will be built on an area of approx 240 thousand square meters and will consist of 15 tracks 740 meters long, 6 electric gantry cranes, as well as parking for semi-trailers, operational offices and a warehouse for the storage of spare parts and for minor maintenance. The construction works will last three years and, once fully operational, the terminal will offer a maximum capacity of 22 pairs of trains per day, handling approximately 395,000 UTI (intermodal transport units) annually.
The investment
The total investment will be approximately 108.5 million euros. The development of Milano Smistamento is part of the objectives of the FS group’s industrial plan to increase the quality of intermodal transport and expand the rail traffic network so as to achieve the 2030 Agenda objective of 30% of goods transported by rail. Swiss investment outside its national borders is nothing new. The Swiss Confederation has already financed other Italian transhipment terminals, such as those in Brescia and Piacenza. A concrete contribution also in terms of sustainability, with the launch of Milano Smistamento it will in fact be possible to cover, in just one year, the quantity of goods transported by 150,000 truck shipments.
