From Brussels another warning to Italy for the ratification of the Mes

There is a reform that is missing from today’s appeal, when the government will meet with the opposition to discuss presidentialism, differentiated autonomy and premiership. And the ratification of the Mes, loudly requested by Europe but so far remained unfinished. The pressure from Brussels has been going on for months and, in recent weeks, is probably reaching its peak: just think of the Ecofin meeting ten days ago, where the president of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoehe commented impatiently on the hesitation of the Italian government. Yesterday came yet another reminder from a European official: “Ratification is a prerogative of national parliaments and we must respect this process”. Until the request for announce “when Italy intends to ratify the Mes”.

The date to be looked at this time is next Monday, when EU finance ministers will officially meet to discuss the banking crises, linked to the short-term collapse of the quotations of Svb and Credit Suisse. But, behind the scenes, it will be another opportunity for comparison between Giancarlo Giorgetti and the corresponding European representatives on the reform of the state bailout fund.

However, a confrontation is announced, because the position of the Mef remains, for now, always the same: the government is pushing for a modification that widens the perimeter of the treaty, making it an instrument of growth that is not only an emergency. And, in this way, the vicious circle that paralyzes the reform is perpetuated: in fact, in order to be able to intervene on the text, Brussels asks for the yes of all countries, including Italy.
