Friuli Venezia Giulia, center-right leaders united: Fedriga ready for an encore. Schlein and Conte allies at range

In the regional elections of 2 and 3 April in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the center-right alliance was also united on Friday in the closing of the electoral campaign with the meeting in Udine of the three leaders, Giorgia Meloni (in video connection, because she was blocked in Rome due to commitments of government), Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani. But the polls will not only give a predictable response – as all the analysts claim – with the encore of the Northern League Massimiliano Fedriga on the center-left antagonist Massimo Moretuzzo and, detached, Alessanro Maran for the Third Pole and Giorgia Tripoli for Together free.

The cards will also serve to measure the weight of the League and that of the Brothers of Italy. Even if beyond the internal balance of power, Giorgia Meloni dispelled any doubts about the future relationship between the Lega and FdI in the Giunta Fvg: «Massimiliano is for me first of all a friend, a capable, honest person, a punctual administrator, a loyal ally on that can be relied upon at every level.

Schlein and Conte allies at range

Allies, but at a distance. Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte arrived in Friuli Venezia Giulia to support the candidate for leadership of the Region, Massimo Moretuzzo. However, they held rallies on different days. Pd and M5s are still looking for an alliance that is difficult to define. As demonstrated, for example, by the case Udine: the Pd candidates the former rector for mayor Happy DeTonialso supported by the Third Pole, while he runs for the M5S Ivano Marchiol. Mixed teams for the Region, where the Third Pole runs alone, fielding Alessandro Maran. From Pd and M5s, however, it was clarified that the “separate” rallies of Schlein and Conte were not a way to mark the differences: only “a question of different agendas”, explained by both sides.

Convergences and distances between Pd and M5s

Beyond the Friuli Venezia Giulia case, the position of the leaders of the two forces is clear: alliances are not made at the table, but on issues, both locally and nationally. There is no shortage of points in common, from the minimum wage to public health to rights. But there are also distances. And they are not irrelevant. First of all, the one on sending weapons to Ukraine, with the Democratic Party in favor and the M5s asking for a stop.
