The European Commission has just launched ten new pilot projects for rail links between two or more European countries to encourage the use of the train for continental travel and two of these concern Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa. The first project leads to Germany and relates to the new Rome-Munich and Milan-Munich routes proposed by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Deutsche Bahn, with the possibility of extension up to Berlin. The routes have already been planned. Departure from Rome and then stops in Florence, Bologna, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano, Brennero, Innsbruck and Munich. For the journey that starts from the Lombard capital, the stops are Brescia, Verona, Bolzano, Brennero, Innsbruck and Munich. The train frequency will be daily and the services will be provided in collaboration between Trenitalia, Obb and DB. Finally, there is also a start date for the connections: by 2026.

Spain

The train would be the Frecciarossa 1000 because it already complies with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability and has already been approved in Spain and for interoperability services between Italy and France. The Italian-Spanish consortium Ilsa (Intermodalidad del Levante) is behind the project concerning the Iberian peninsula. There are two proposed connections: one capable of linking Lisbon to La Coruna and the other which will take you from the Portuguese capital to Madrid.

Long and cross-border journeys

In detail, the European Commission has announced that it will support ten pilot projects for new railway connections or to improve existing ones. Cross-border rail connections across the European Union will therefore become faster and more frequent. “While the demand for green mobility is growing – said Adina Vlea, European Commissioner for Transport – we need the railway market to respond better and faster, especially for long and cross-border journeys. That’s why the European Commission now wants to help railway companies by creating new international rail connections, day and night, by breaking down borders.”
