Professor Francesco Pitrolo, personal doctor of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to whom he was bound by a great friendship, died suddenly during the night.

Pitrolo, who leaves behind his wife and daughter, was director of the Cardiology Unit of the Cervello Hospital in Palermo and had been awarded the knighthood of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in November 2021. From Palermo, always the president’s doctor, he also often accompanied him on official visits abroad, becoming a point of reference for all those who follow the head of state on his travels.

The President of the Republic has decided to cancel today’s public commitments, i.e. participation in the National Day of Health, Social-Health, Social-Assistance and Voluntary Workers and in the presentation of the Report of the Italiadecide Association.
