Fontana announces that there will be a nursery school in the Chamber

From the Speaker of the House Lorenzo Fontana the announcement. “Breastfeeding in the Chamber is good – says the Northern League – there is a commitment to create an internal nursery school”. The task is now in the hands of the College of Quaestors. The declaration came on the occasion of the meeting between the president and the parliamentary press to congratulate the holidays.

2014 the latest proposal

A similar project was advanced in 2014 by the former vice president of the Chamber Marina Serene. Not a real kindergarten, rather “a space of hospitality to make it easier for parents to see their children in Montecitorio”, said the deputy. From the previous year, however, the request for asylum by the former deputy and fencing champion of Civic Choice Valentina Vezzali, who managed to collect 200 signatures in the Palace for the cause. A stalemate that could however be realized with the proposal of the new president Fontana.

The initiative arrives in Montecitorio only a month after the ok from the Giunta for the parliamentary regulation on breastfeeding in parliamentary halls. The proposal, presented by the exponent of the 5 Star Movement Gilda Sportiello, was given the final go-ahead on November 15th. A decision-making process that already began on 27 July with the positive opinion of the Chamber on the agenda “on the methods of participation of mother deputies in parliamentary work” in the internal budget of Montecitorio, signed by the same pentastellata. Through a specific request, the derogation allows the new mother to “enter the parliamentary halls, during the sessions, with her child within the first year of age, to allow her to be breastfed”. The proposal modified the parliamentary regulation which restricted entry to the Chamber to insiders. In fact, “no person from outside the Chamber – stated the code – may, under any pretext, enter the Chamber where its members sit”.

“To this end – established the Giunta – at the choice of the deputy to be promptly communicated to the competent offices, special workstations located in the last upper row of the hemicycle can be used in the Assembly”.
