The meetings of the corporate bodies of the Italian Federation of Newspaper Editors renewed their offices for the three-year period 2023-2026: Andrea Riffeser Monti was confirmed in the role of president. After the thanks for the recognition by the government in the information supply chain, Riffeser illustrated the objectives of the next three years for emerge early from the crisis and achieve a reform of publishing. In 1981 – he said – when the sector was affected by profound changes in production systems with the transition from linotype to phototypesetting, a law was passed to support the technological transformations. Today, even the digital transformation requires a new system law. This is why we have foreseen a Commission with the aim of formulating reform proposals to the government, Parliament and political forces.

The publishing recovery plan

Specifically, the president of Fieg listed the five fundamental points on which the relaunch of the sector must be based:
1. the support of the institutions, with institutional campaigns functional to the growth of the country;
2. intellectual property, with greater valorisation of editorial content on paper and online;
3. the improvement of the distribution channel, with a further liberalization of the network – added Riffeser -, the fight against the desertification of the points of sale and the doubling of the possibility of contact between newspapers and potential readers, the guarantee of the opening of newsagents on public holidays, the activation – in collaboration with distribution companies and newsagents – of additional points of sale in areas without newsstands as an exception to the constraints of equal treatment, with an increase in home deliveries of publications;
4. the role of advertising, focusing on promoting the use of newspapers (print and digital) in commercial and institutional communication and on guaranteeing transparency;
5. the labor market, through an extraordinary plan for the recruitment of young people – concluded the president Fieg –, also with recourse to the early retirement of journalists and the modification of the rules on early retirement of journalists, maintaining the hiring obligation.

The other nominations

Francesco Dini, president of the daily newspaper publishers category, and Giuseppe Ferrauto, president of the periodical newspaper publishers category, were confirmed as vice presidents. They will be joined by Pierpaolo Camadini, vice president representing medium and small newspaper and periodical publishing companies. Stefano De Alessandri was elected president of the press agency publishers category and Francesco Sortino, president of the digital publications category. Finally, the directors were also appointed: Stefano De Alessandri, for trade union relations, Francesco Dini for the market and advertising and Carlo Mandelli for the protection of copyright and competition. Andrea Riffeser Monti assumes the responsibility for distribution and sales ad interim. Mirja Cartia d’Asero will preside over the newly established Commission for the reform of publishing. Carlo Alberto Trugua was elected treasurer of the Federation.
