Many new features in the team, behind the wheel and at the helm: Oscar Piastri, 21, Australian, F2 champion (2021) after F3 (2020), snatched from the Alpine with a controversial affair. He took over from Daniel Ricciardo (who returned to Red Bull as third driver) to drive alongside Lando Norris, 23, in his 5th year in the Circus. The team will be led by the Italian Andrea Stella, 51, from Orvieto, former executive director of the team as well as Alonso’s engineer at the time of Ferrari (“I will bring my experience to the team”). He is now team principal, wanted by CEO Zak Brown (“It was very easy to choose him”) after the farewell of Andreas Seidl who moved to Sauber as managing director.

McLaren’s ambition is to move up the standings closed last year with just one podium and fifth place, behind Alpine. “We are realistic for this season, to be in the top 4, but also optimistic to increase our competitiveness,” said Stella. “We are aware that we have work to do, but like everyone in the team I am totally focused and committed to making our 60th anniversary special.
