“There is certainly a theme of rules and transparency in the institutions, but no law can ever replace the responsibility of the autonomous function of politics, free from conditioning, which makes the institutions live and does not occupy them. Stefano Bonaccini takes a position on the “Qatargate”, the corruption affair in the European Parliament which sees under investigation among others Antonio Panzeri, exponent of Article 1 (suspended from the party) and former MEP of the Democratic Party. The “moral issue” must be “at the top of the priorities of the Dems”, underlines the candidate for the secretariat.

“Anyone who thinks and acts to the contrary cannot be part of the Democratic Party, in any way or role,” he says. “However, I would add one thing: the Pd delegation to the European Parliament, as far as I know and as far as I have been able to verify in the documents and relations with Qatar, has always acted – declares the governor – with a straight back and unequivocally, putting at the center those civil and social rights that are the foundation of our party”.

“No one can think of politics and parties as instruments of pressure available to private interests. Not even when legitimate,” writes Bonaccini in a long post on Facebook. Even more outrageous, and unacceptable, is if these interests are those of foreign countries. Whether they want to show a clean face while denying people’s rights, whether they want to interfere with the electoral outcome or the democratic quality of other States, or who want to determine a different orientation in the foreign policy of others, the substance is always one: these countries violate the our sovereignty (or that of Europe) is the main function of politics and democracy. And whoever places himself at their service betrays his own institutions, his own task and the values ​​assigned to them. Building a system of prevention with respect to these forms of influence, or actual interference (and not only when of an openly corruptive type), is also the task of the parties”.

“In the Democratic Party – writes the president of Emilia Romagna and candidate for the secretariat – the representation of collective interests does not allow forms of coexistence or intertwining with the representation of private interests. Anyone who thinks differently must stay or be put out. Say “the judiciary shed light” is not enough: I am always a guarantor and I do not do and do not accept preventive, media processes. However, this has nothing to do with the moral question in the sense I have indicated: what is emerging is incompatible with our community , our values ​​and our function, regardless of the Criminal Code. No ambiguity, no hesitation”. Bonaccini concludes: “On one point there is no discussion: if personal honesty must be a prerequisite for the exercise of politics – for every economic and social activity, let it be clear, but certainly starting from those who hold public functions – the moral question it must be at the top of our priorities.There is no healthy and true guarantee without the exercise of this responsibility.
