EU funds, 350 million allocated for digital skies

The European program sesar3 has selected 48 research projects under its ambitious research program named Digital European Skywhose goal is to make the air traffic management in Europe smarter and more sustainable.

Selected projects

One initiative will go to the initiatives identified – six are Italian total investment of 350 million euros by the aviation industry and the European Union through Horizon Europe. Of the 48 projects, 30 are industrial research and concern critical areas, such as emissions reduction, automation made possible by artificial intelligence, drone integration solutions (U-space) and urban services for air mobility. The remaining 18 projects are innovative research not yet applied to industrial processes and aim to promote new and innovative ideas to transform air traffic management in Europe, as well as to encourage coordinated knowledge exchange and stimulate the future skilled workforce. The projects were selected following a call for proposals in 2022, followed by a rigorous evaluation by independent experts.

“The scope of the selected projects reflects the research and innovation priorities outlined in the multiannual work program of the SESAR3 programme. They cover a wide range of technologies required to deliver the Digital European Sky by 2040in the wake of the European Green Deal and the EU initiative Europe fit for the digital age”.

Italian initiatives

Among the Italian initiatives there is the Gilead project led byEnav (with €3.8 million in funding), whose aim is to develop a new concept for air routes to make air traffic control operations more sustainable and flexible. To this same category also belongs the FCDI project driven by Leonardowhich aims to develop future communication, navigation and surveillance technologies to support and manage operational services thanks to an allocation of almost 12 million euros.

Finally, there are four Italian projects (out of the 18 selected exploratory research projects) coordinated by the Italian company Deep Blue: “Airplane” (funded with 992 thousand euros), to mitigate the climate impact of aviation and improve the sector’s resilience to climate change; “Tail” (1.9 million), to develop an artificial intelligence-based digital assistant capable of predicting future air traffic and assessing the stress levels and attention span of air traffic controllers, to support them and better manage the traffic load Work; “Engage 2” (3.7 million), which will continue the work of the predecessor project in sharing the resources and results of the SESAR research program and transferring them towards technological applications; “Hucan” (998 thousand euros), which proposes a new approach for the certification and approval of technologies that are increasingly automated and enabled by artificial intelligence.

Public-private partnership

Sesar is a public-private partnership which aims to modernize air traffic control in Europe. It coordinates all the bodies within the European Union which undertake research and development in this sector to improve the costs, capacity, safety and environmental impact of air traffic management. The first funding programme, Sesar1, ended in 2016. The next one, Sesar2020, will run until 2024, while Sesar3 was launched in 2021 and envisages investments of 1.6 billion euros by 2030.
