«Erranti Christmases» revives the Church of Sant’Agostino degli Scalzi

When the Spanish religious Andrea Diez came to Naples it was 1592. His goal was to spread the reformed order of the Discalced Augustinians. And in what was open countryside and above the full city he laid the foundation stone of the great church, entrusting the project to Giovanni Giacomo di Conforto. Under the stuccoes of Lorenzo Vaccaro, the church was embellished with paintings by Mattia Preti and Luca Giordano which can now be seen in the Capodimonte Museum. After years of abandonment and looting, the church is managed by an association which hosts exhibitions and shows and animates the social reality of the Materdei district.
This time Baba Yaga Theater that in the church of Sant’Agostino degli Scalzi, presents the review Wandering Christmases: three shows that are part of the Altri Natali series organized by the Municipality of Naples.
It starts on Saturday 17 December at 7pm with “Errors” with Rosalba Di Girolamo narrator and Federica Ottombrino on guitar, accordion and voice. The show, based on short stories by Gabriel Garca Marquez, Julio Cortzar and Eduardo Galeano.
Those Mistakes of love and more
Errors
speaks of the most deceptive of feelings – says the actress – love, and mental instability. And she does it by telling stories of life and loneliness. Because narrating comes from the fear of being alone, because narrating embraces the listener, and so we find ourselves whole. This hug is what Errors wants to give the spectators: through the words and the magical atmospheres of the greatest South American writers, a narrator and a singer, accompanied by the sound of a guitar and an accordion, tell stories of lives in the balance: a woman who finds herself climbing the ‘ wrong bus, another obsessively making pastries…or maybe they get lost: Errors tells of that moment in which the profound discovery of the other leads us to know ourselves to the point of faltering, of losing orientation and balance.
Emotions on stage
When I created this show – he says Rosalba DiGirolamo – I immediately thought of Federica. We come from different artistic worlds, but I felt she was the right choice, perhaps precisely because of our differences which, when merged, multiply the emotions we want to communicate, because they arise from similar sensitivities. I wanted to tell stories of stumbles, of mistakes precisely, because “the call of making a mistake is a breath that contains an invitation: come and see”: I would like to open a reflection on the need to meet the other to discover ourselves. Just like in Errors. And it all led me to the magical universe of the greatest South American writers.
Between Brunella and Dolores
Thursday 22nd December at 7pm we continue with the Boas Festas concert with Brunella Selo, Dolores Melodia and Carmine D’Aniello.
A quality triptych that will narrate the Nativity through popular traditions from all over the world, following the suggestions and stories narrated of Mexican, Irish, South American, Portuguese Christmas, gradually up to the Neapolitan one.
With the bloody and eclectic voices of Brunella Selo, Dolores Melodia and Carmine D’Aniello, who accompany themselves on guitar, tammorra and accordion, and the strings (guitar battente, quatro, charango, bouzouki) by Roberto Trenca, the concert Boas festas wants to celebrate the beauty and spirituality contained in the melodies and stories related to Christmas.
Finally we always return to Ithaca
After Christmas, December 29th, closing with (at 7pm) Ithaca. Mediterranean reference of Rosalba Di Girolamo herself from writings by Predrag Matvejevic, Jose Saramago, Konstantinos Kavafis and Worman Shire with Di Girolamo (narrator), Marzouk Mejri (songs, winds, strings, percussion and electronic sounds). The show was born from the encounter with Mediterranean Breviary, the largest scientific-philosophical-poetic treatise on the Mare Nostro, in which Predrag Matvejevic recounts similarities and contrasts, from the architecture of lighthouses to submerged cities, from the profiles of the coasts to those of men, from prayers to blasphemies, from persecuted religions to traditions culinary, such as that of stone broth, an ancient Mediterranean dish. Ithaca – concludes Di Girolamo – tells of all of us, human beings on a journey in search of welcome and peace, the Tunisian musician and the Neapolitan actress cross the waters of the Mediterranean in words and music: Rosalba Di Girolamo’s narration merges with the songs and the ancestral music of Marzouk Meijri to give voice to the voice of the Mare Nostro, made up of silences and polyphonies.
