Presented the rich program of events that blends the cinema of the Otranto Film Festival with the traditional concert on the night of January 1st. Great guests on stage

Of Nicola Signorile

LECCE — Cinema and music to end 2022 on a high note. The formula chosen by the city of Otranto mixes the cinema that arises from the territories, often a mirror of different cultures, the fulcrum of the programming of the Otranto Film Festival, for the first time in a winter version ( usually in September), and the traditional event that enlivens the city during the Christmas holidays until New Year’s Eve, the Alba dei Popoli. A merger blessed by the Municipality and the Apulia Film Commission foundation, who also work together in the Promoting Committee, of the Candidacy of Otranto for Italian Capital of Culture 2025 “Otranto 2025. Mosaic of Cultures”.

The mosaic of events

The mosaic presented yesterday by the Extraordinary Commissioner Vincenza Filippi places the accent on Otranto as a symbolic place of the Mediterranean, a crossroads of cultures, a mix of ethnic groups. Alba dei Popoli, Italy’s first greeting to the light of the East, since 1999, has hosted artists of the caliber of Goran Bregovic, Franco Battiato, Vinicio Capossela. L’Off, directed by the actress Stefania Rocca since 2019, is a moment of reflection on European and Mediterranean cinema, as well as a meeting place between national and continental film productions, which promotes the historical and cultural specificities of the regions which, through the seventh art have told their territories. The rich program starts tomorrow with the Morgan concert, a tribute to Carmelo Bene, one of the favorites of the former Bluvertigo singer-songwriter, and to contemporary cinema, staged at the Aragonese Castle.

From tomorrow the best of the festival directed by Stefania Rocca

From Sunday, again at the Castle, the Otranto Film Festival will kick off with “Connecting World”, the best of the various editions of the review, curated by the Rocca itself. On the programme, among others, the bittersweet father-daughter story Andromeda Galaxy by Kosovar More Raca, the surprising comedy The teacher by by Jan Hrebejk and Girl, directorial debut by Lucas Dhont, a transgender coming-of-age story. This will be followed by a section dedicated to community cinema which will host the short Santa Claus by Alessandro Valenti and Wonder by Stephen Chbosky. Finally, “Reflections of distant lands”, in which Off and Alba dei Popoli cross their programming thanks to works such as Corn Island by the Georgian George Ovashvili, Nicola: Mussels, kebab & Coca Cola by Antonio Palumbo and Morrison by Federico Zampaglione.

The concert of peace

The Roman singer-songwriter himself will be the protagonist with his band, Tiromancino, on December 30th of a masterclass and a concert at 9pm in via delle Torri/Largo Porta Terra. The grand closing of the cycle of events reserved, after midnight on the 31st, for the Concert for Peace by Ambrogio Sparagna at the helm of the Italian Orchestra, an ensemble of voices, accordions, percussions and other traditional instruments offering a varied repertoire that embraces different regions of Italy: the show “Taranta d’Amore” will be a great party-show dedicated to the dances of the Italian popular tradition, gigues, saltarelli, ballarelle, pizziche, tammurriate and, above all, tarantella.
