The decline in electricity consumption continues in Italy. In April – reports Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid – the demand for electricity amounted to 23.4 billion kilowatt hours, a decrease of 4.3% compared to the same period of 2022. This is the ninth month of consecutive decline. Italians began to use less electricity in August, when energy prices reached all-time highs: in fact, it was in the second half of August that gas at the TTF in Amsterdam, the European reference market, exceeded 350 euros/ MWh. The price of electricity linked to that of gas (which for our country represents the main source of production) is generally double. Today, 19 May, gas on the Italian wholesale market (Psv) is around 33 euros per megawatt hour, while electricity is around 102 euros/MWh.

The figure for industrial consumption was also down, recording a drop of 9.1% compared to April 2022. Compared to the same month in 2022, consumption in the ceramics and glass and means of transport sectors is on the rise. In the first four months of the year, the national requirement decreased by 4.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2022 (-3.7% the adjusted value).
