Electricity, consumption down by 5% in March.  Record for wind power generation

In March, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, Italy consumed a total of 26.2 billion kWh, a value down by 5% compared to the same month in 2022. The recovery of consumption in the industrial sector, which recorded a limited negative change (-0.9%) compared to March 2022.

In the first three months of the year, the national requirement fell by 4% compared to the corresponding period of 2022 (-3.6% the adjusted value). In detail, March had the same number of working days (23) and an average monthly temperature 2.5°C higher than the same month in 2022. The electricity demand figure, seasonally adjusted and corrected for the temperature effect, is decrease of 3.4%.

The need is growing

At the territorial level, the trend change in March 2023 was negative everywhere: -5.3% in the North, -5.2% in the Center and -4.4% in the South and on the Islands. In economic terms, the value of the demand electricity, seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the temperature effect, is substantially stationary (-0.3%) compared to February of this year. Overall, in the first quarter of 2023, the demand figure increased by 1% compared to the last quarter of 2022.

This result is also confirmed by the cyclical variations of the Imcei index elaborated by Terna, which examines the industrial consumption of the so-called energy-intensive companies. In fact, the index recorded an increase both compared to February (+3.2%) and compared to the last quarter of 2022 (+2.7%). In particular, compared to the same month last year, there has been an increase in consumption in the sectors of means of transport, ceramics and glass, chemicals, food and steel.

Renewables on the rise

In March 2023, 83.8% of the Italian electricity demand was met with domestic production and the remainder (16.2%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production amounted to 22.2 billion kWh (-8.9%). The contribution of renewable sources is growing, which covered 33.5% of electricity demand in March (compared to 28.4% in the same month of 2022).
