Electricity and gas bills, the discount for old customers of the fixed price arrives: that’s who does it

Gas prices have collapsed since September

The storm is abating. From around 200 euros per megawatt hour at the end of September to around 55 euros/MWh on average at the beginning of February. The price of gas on the reference European market, the Amsterdam TTF (on 8 February it was listed just above 54 euro/MWh) and the Italian PSV as a result (61 euro/MWh) have collapsed and now the energy companies that supply contracts electricity and gas pay for methane a quarter compared to five months ago. Those who have contracts with variable prices indexed to wholesale market quotations (Pun for electricity and Psv for gas) are benefiting from the discounts. But those who have an expired fixed contract were displaced at the time of renewals. If, in fact, it benefited from the price freeze by decree (for unexpired contracts the unilateral change of the price prohibited until 30 June 2023), when the expiry of the economic conditions arrived, price increases were triggered, which are only permitted for contracts expired. Many contracts expired at the beginning of 2023 and the law requires offers of the new price to be made by the supplier at least 90 days before the deadline. So the renewal proposals for contracts expiring at the end of the year were made at the end of September, when the price was still very high. So the offers were based on quotations that were now out of date with respect to the period to which they would have been applied. This has always been the case, but in the past the price of gas was stable and not as volatile as it has been for a year and a half now. Now there are those who think of giving a discount or giving a bonus to customers. Let’s see who these companies are and which utilities still offer new contracts at a fixed price.
