Elections in Lombardy, Bonaccini: "Majorino is the best candidate we could have, excellent administrator with an international outlook"

“We could not find a better candidate: Pierfrancesco Majorino was an excellent administrator, he is doing well as a European parliamentarian and therefore also has an international vision”.

The candidate for the secretariat of the Democratic Party, Stefano Bonaccini, at the end of the first day of his Milanese convention, spoke of the ongoing challenge in the Lombard regional elections, scheduled in two weeks: «The challenge in Lombardy is far from trivial but with this law either he or Fontana wins the election, so anyone, even those who don’t think exactly like us, must be asked to think carefully because the alternative is either change and renewal or conservation”.

And it is Majorino himself who defines the last weeks of the electoral campaign “an exciting race against time: before it was impossible, today it is difficult but maybe we will discover that we are the surprise”.

A regional match which however also has national implications: «I have always made it clear that the challenge here is tough but I am convinced that if we can win here we can help rebuild the centre-left and the Democratic Party».

However, the Democratic Party MEP says he is optimistic for the future because “I see a lot of energy in this electoral campaign and this indicates a course because we are not a political party in the process of liquidation, we are a political force that is completing its reconstruction”.

The Democratic Party, adds Majporino, “needs a clear and decisive change, we need a tougher party, more capable of clearly indicating some choices in terms of support for those who work, on welfare reform, we must start from people”.

Simona Malpezzi, the group leader in the Senate of the Democratic Party, introduced the theme of the regional elections on stage, throwing a dig at the Third Pole: «We are very sorry that you have chosen to support what was Fontana’s deputy, Letizia Moratti, responsible of those community houses that risk being just ribbons cut for the inaugurations, and as responsible as Fontana for the long waiting lists that unfortunately the citizens of Lombardy know well».

Lack of alliance also commented by the mayor of Bergamo Giorgio Gori: «If the Third Pole hadn’t made this so wrong choice of supporting Moratti but had found a convergence with the Pd, today we will be ahead in the polls. We’re playing it all the same but if we had been able to compose all the oppositions to the center-right, the change would have been safe ».

According to Gori, however, the match of 12 and 13 February is still to be played: «This time there are better conditions than the ones I faced five years ago. I went to the vote on the same day as the policies Renzi’s Pd lost and that political vote also conditioned the regional one. Now things are different. We can play it.”

And it is the mayor of Bergamo who, in his speech from the stage, expresses the discontent of a part of the Democratic Party regarding the passage to the Pd of the former M5s Dino Giarrusso (announced just this morning on the stage of the Milanese event): «I believe that there is the risk of a race to get on the bandwagon of the winner and when I see who has said the worst things about our party, show up here to say “I’m here too” maybe it’s right to set some limits».
