16 million citizens to vote

In Milan, on the right, it is thought to speed up the elections: in any case, in Lombardy, the Democratic Party is still on the high seas. But in the Capital Region, the center-right is groping in the dark, uncertain who to pit against D’Amato

It seemed probable, now it’s certain. Only the official is missing, but the decision is made. It will be election day. Lombardy and Lazio will vote together, on the same day: and the date identified is that of Sunday 12 February.

Converging, so to speak, albeit opposing interests form the basis of the decision. On the one hand, Pisana has a rather transversal interest in dragging it out as long as possible: a need felt above all on the left, in that Democratic Party which hopes to keep the fort left unguarded by Nicola Zingaretti and wants to try to exploit the long wave of the congressional debate as a driving force for the electoral campaign, with the center-right still wandering around looking for a candidate to oppose the outgoing health councilor, Alessio D’Amatoinvested by dem and third pole.

On the other hand, then, the haste of Attilio Fontana. In Milan, as the Economy Minister also confided in recent days Giancarlo Giorgetti, the possible negative effects of inflation and recession are feared, which will be felt more and more during 2023. Therefore, it is better to anticipate. Also because in Lombardy it is the centre-left that is groping in the dark, with the Democratic Party stubborn in not sharing the name of Letizia Moratti proposed by Carlo Calenda, but at the same time unable to find a suitable candidate.
And so, on February 12, there will be a vote in both regions. And a number is enough to understand why it will not be just a local vote: between Lazio and Lombardy, there are almost 16 million inhabitants. More than a quarter of the total number of Italian citizens.
