Differentiated regional autonomy, over 65 mile signs for the popular law proposal against the Calderoli reform

While the premier Melons is preparing to meet the opposition to accelerate presidentialism, the protest continues against the reform of differentiated regional autonomy wanted by the Northern League minister Calderoli. In fact, more than 65,000 signatures have been collected by the Coordination for Constitutional Democracy, chaired by Massimo Villonewhich he wants to counter the effects of the reform of Title V of the Constitution and “preserve the unity of the country”.

“We express great satisfaction for having reached and largely exceeded the necessary signatures (50,000 are enough, over 65,000 have arrived and more are on the way) before the end of the campaign”, rejoices the coordination. “In the next few days – continues the note – we will communicate the exact number of signatures received and the date of the filing of the law in the Senate, where it will be examined according to the procedures and times established by article 74 of the Senate regulation”.

Specifically, the popular initiative bill (to which over 120 constitutional lawyers, jurists, academics and economists have signed up) aims to amend article 117 of the Constitution by requesting the insertion of “a clause of supremacy of state law aimed at protecting the national interest and the juridical and economic unity of the Republic”. In practice, the Regions can work for autonomy, but the latter will be limited. “The objective of the proposed modification – reads the proposal – is to allow a limited and justified variability of regional autonomy, however expunging the elements that make it potentially dangerous for the unity of the country”.
