With these words Louis DiMaio replies, on Twitter, to the EU High Representative Joseph Borrell, who shortly before had formalized Di Maio’s new role as EU special envoy for the Persian Gulf. a big responsibility. I am ready to engage, listen and find shared solutions with members of theEuropean Union to strengthen our security and prosperity.
Honored to be entrusted by HRVP @JosepBorrellF and EU Member States as first EUSR for the Gulf region. It’s a great responsibility. The former foreign minister will take office on June 1, with an initial mandate of 21 months (until 28 February 2025). The tasks of the new EU special representative – it is learned from a note from the Council – will be to further develop a stronger, more global and strategic partnership with the countries of the Gulf region, supporting the high representative in the implementation of foreign and security policy aspects.
Di Maio, after careful consideration, had been indicated as the most suitable candidate for the post of EU special envoy for the Gulf by Josep Borrell (EU Foreign Minister) in a letter dated 21 April addressed to the ambassadors of the Political and Security Committee of the Member States.
Shameful indication, an insult to Italy and to thousands of clever diplomats, had commented by the League. The current owner of the Farnesina, Antonio Tajani, he explained that it was a choice of Borrell. Di Maio was indicated by Draghi and not the candidate of the Italian government. The appointment of an EU envoy for the Gulf was long overdue but the outbreak of qatargate, last December 9, he had slowed down the selection process.
