Books, music and cinema: how the culture bonus was spent

Starting from 2016, once they turn 18, young people receive a “gift” bonus worth 500 euros to spend on cultural goods and services, such as books, theater tickets, cinema tickets, museums and newspapers. The aim of the initiative was to relaunch a slow-growing sector, often even below zero, especially among the younger population and so it happened: subscriptions to the so-called “18app”, the platform through which to take advantage of the incentive, have grown from 356 thousand six years ago to go beyond 441 thousand in 2021, as well as the funds allocated by the government which have risen from the initial 178 million to 230 million euros. In particular, last year a large part of purchases, around two thirds, consisted of books; in second place is music in all its forms, from live concerts to subscriptions to streaming platforms up to the revival of vinyl; to follow the screenings at the cinema, but the real surprise was the success of the foreign language courses.
The idea of the Draghi government was to make the measure structural, it is probable instead that the Meloni government will make it disappear starting from 2023. This can be seen from an amendment presented to the budget law by the Brothers of Italy, Lega and Forza Italia , who would like to save these resources to be reused in other ways always in culture.
