Even on the questions of the western allies, the minister remains cautious: “The pressures that Germany has undergone are absurd. I don’t meddle in the affairs of other countries”. Olaf Scholz, chancellor of a country whose government coalition won by also promising a reduction in military spending – and Crosetto points this out – has never adopted a clear-cut stance on military aid to Ukraine. Indeed, he has proved refractory from the beginning. And now, in a new phase of the war, with Russia ready for a new offensive and Volodymyr Zelensky that calls for tanks as well as defense systems, the relationship between the government and public opinion is becoming more delicate. And the hesitations are also seen within the Italian majority, despite the fact that the extension to the shipment of arms has been approved and the sixth decree is being finalized.
Furthermore, “Ukrainians are convinced that German tanks could change the outcome of the war” – says Crosetto -, and so you need to support them: “We need air defense material to defend against missiles” he continues, and then, however, adds that: “In the sixth decree there is no trace of artillery weapons and land vehicles”.
