Conte focuses on the territories to eat the Democratic Party

No longer the liquid Movement of the first hour, the “biodegradable” one – to use the words of the founder Beppe Grillo -, but a more structured and rooted movement, with an approach that is close to that of the traditional parties. Territorial groups are born and it is “a real organizational revolution”, reads the website of the Movement. Giuseppe Conte plays the charge. “We need you”, he says, calling the subscribers together, inviting them to participate: “Now we have the concrete tool”. They are not called sections, a word that perhaps in via di Campo Marzio they consider too twentieth-century, but in essence it does not seem to change much: they will be working groups, with at least 30 participants – as many, according to the regulation, there must be in order to start the preliminary investigation for the creation of the group. There will also be one for Italians abroad.

In the video with which the announcement is made, the head of the grillini explains that politics is made from below, that elective positions are not needed to participate and that the militants are “the sparks, the driving force, the beating heart”.

The new Grillina phase also passes through here with the former prime minister who, after having closed the season of one is worth one, now looks to the left without ever defining himself as a leftist, and wants to eat up what remains of the Democratic Party, screwed up in the discussions internal, waiting for a Congress that risks exacerbating tensions rather than regenerating their identity.

And so, to succeed in the enterprise, Giuseppe Conte focuses on the territories, those that once represented the strength of the traditional left and where today the dem are struggling. It is there that the Movement has shown the main gaps in recent years and today wants to recover. Excluding the exploits of Virginia Raggi in Rome and Chiara Appendino in Turin – who paid the price in the following elections – the grillini have never made it into the local dimensiona criticality made evident by the discrepancy between the results obtained at a political level and those, much less positive, of regional and municipal disputes.

These groups will also try to respond to this need, trying to fill that deficit of representation and communication between the leaders of the Movement and the base that the militants themselves have often complained about. After the national and thematic committees, here is therefore a new element of the party according to Conti’s approach.

The watchwords and the main themes that will have to be addressed are those that the great bridge builder likes Goffredo Bettini – social justice, the fight against inequalities, protection of work, income and the home – and it is precisely to that electorate that the Movement seems to be addressing this occasion as well. It is no coincidence that a few days ago, on the occasion of the presentation of Bettini’s book, Conte reiterated it: “If his theses prevail, it will be easy to find each other again”.

In the meantime, it is better to carry on, to be ready and perhaps stronger. On the other hand, the electoral wind that revived the Movement in the polls hasn’t stopped blowing. According to the latest SWG survey for La7, the grillini are at 17 percent, still growing and above all ahead of the Democratic Party, which stops at 16 percent.
