Conte distances himself from Elly and the unions: there will be no Saturday in Bologna

The demonstration called by the CGIL, CISL and UIL against the government’s May Day decree fails to unite the leaders of the left. The former prime minister is engaged in the campaign for administrative elections

At this Saturday’s demonstration in Bologna “for a new season of work and rights”, convened by the CGIL, CISL and UIL, there will be Elly Schlein but not Giuseppe Conte. If the chemistry between the secretary of the Democratic Party and the unions seems to be in excellent shape – just yesterday the last meeting with Maurizio Landini at the Leopolda – the grillino boss pulls himself out, officially because he is involved in the campaign for the next administrations. A motivation that, however, is easy to trace back to a deeper political need: for weeks in the polls the consensus of the 5 star Movement has been eroded by the dem, in an overlapping of roles that harms the former prime minister. Hence the need to dig out its own political space, far from the squares of the trade unions.

Once again though, the opposition fails to achieve a simulacrum of unity: not even in the protest against the government’s May Day decree, at the center of the demonstration in Bologna. There will be time to make up for it and the unions calendar foresees a new outcry on the 13th in Milan, then on the 20th in Naples. While the next electoral appointments remain in the background, a first litmus test for the Pd-Movimento 5-star alliance.
