Coldiretti: yes to the EU proposal on tea scheduled for 5 July

“The presentation of the European Commission’s proposal on new agricultural biotechnologies is scheduled for 5 July”. This was recalled by the president of Coldiretti, Ettore Prandini, who a few days after the approval of the amendment to the Drought decree which gives the go-ahead for field experimentation of the new Assisted Evolution Techniques (TEA) went to Brussels for a series of meetings with representatives of the EU institutions. The aim is to ask for the presentation of the new regulatory framework for the development of new genomic selection techniques to be speeded up, which will finally distinguish GMOs – banned in Europe – from assisted evolution techniques.

Techniques that do not involve the insertion of DNA foreign to the plant». Farmers, Coldiretti argues, need effective alternatives to reduce chemical inputs and the impact on natural resources: “Denying this possibility – added Prandini – at the same time forcing farmers to a clear reduction of the tools for defense against phytopathologies , means jeopardizing the security of food supply in the EU and in the world and increasing imports from third countries that do not respect our own standards in terms of environmental and social sustainability, as well as food safety and animal welfare”.
