Green light to a resolution. Tajani: «But on these issues we will decide in Rome». Against the backdrop of the clash, the vote for the 2024 European Championships: the campaign has already started

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
BRUSSELS The EU Parliament voted in plenary by majorityby show of hands, an amendment to the resolution on the annual report on the rule of law in the EU which “condemns the instructions given by the Italian government to the Municipality of Milan to no longer register the children of same-parent couples”
and «invites the Italian government to revoke his decision immediately”. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani replied that “there is a law to be respected, here is a vote on an amendment that does not change the Italian law: this is changed by the Italian Parliament”.

The family law is an exclusive national jurisdiction. But the EU Parliament considers the decision of the Italian government “will inevitably lead to discrimination not only of same-sex couples, but also and above all of their children» and believes that «such an action constitutes a direct violation of the rights of minors, as listed in the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child”. The assembly «expresses concern that this decision is part of a wider one attack against the Lgbtqi+ community in Italy».

The amendment was proposed a week ago by the liberals of Renew Europe. And immediately afterwards Sandro Gozi, elected in France with Macron’s Renaissance party, launched a tweet a gauntlet on EU values to the popular ones, who are increasingly forming alliances with the conservatives of the ECR, which includes the Brothers of Italy. “Direct question to the Ppe, on civil rights – wrote Gozi – do you defend the rule of law or are you with Meloni?”. The answer came from the courtroom, where the popular ones split and one side voted with Renew Europe, the S&D socialists and the Greens. There are no nominal votes on the amendment, but sources within the Ppe group have confirmed that the Forza Italia delegation voted in defense of the government. So did FdI and Lega.

The Italian question has turned into one European battle in view of the next elections in 2024. In fact, the electoral campaign has already begun. It is no mystery that the group leader and president of the EPP Manfred Weber is trying to create an alliance with the conservatives of the ECR, a figure that is growing in several EU countries. Italy represents a political laboratory of great interest. But it is a strategy that does not convince all delegations, especially in states where popular and conservatives are national opponents, as in Poland where national elections are taking place this year and Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform challenges Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s Pis.

Different EPP delegations from the Nordic countries and the Portuguese one they stood up for rainbow families and their vote was crucial. For the head of delegation of FdI-Ecr Carlo Fidanza “the Italian government is condemned for responsibility that it does not have” and for Vincenzo Sofo, Renew’s amendment is a “blatant forcing”. Instead for Brando Benifei, head of delegation of the Democratic Party, “a clear indication” has arrived from the Eurochamber. The issue had already been discussed in the plenary on Monday evening in a debate. During his visit to Brussels, the mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala had invited “the EU Parliament to force the Italian government to be very clear”.
