Chamber, green light to the monthly increase of 1,269 euros. Then an about-face to the 5 Stars. FdI and Pd also give up

Good day for the group leader in Montecitorio. The Bureau of the Chamber has in fact approved for them a
increase
anything but to be thrown away: 2,226.92 gross euros per month which, once the accounts are done, turn into 1269.34 euros net

But perhaps the most relevant news is that an era seems to have ended: for the increase the entire center-right majority voted, but also the 5 Star Movement. Even if the starred group leader in the Chamber, with some emphasis, says it like this: «I, Francesco Silvestri, in line with my personal history and that of the M5S, will not make use of this increase in any way and will ensure that the resources , just as before this resolution became effective, are used for the conduct of our political battles”. Then, also the parent company pd Chiara Braga let it be known that she will not take advantage of the increase (Pd, Avs and IV abstained). And in the evening also the FdI group leader Tommaso Foti announces: “It is right to leave the recipients of the measure the possibility of waiving the same, which I do without any difficulty”.

The additional indemnity serves to balance the accounts with that of the commission presidents, given that the group leaders perform “relevant institutional functions”. Good, but a little less, even for the presidents of the political components who do not have the numbers to form a parliamentary group, and therefore are in the Mixed group. From 1 January 2024, they will be paid an indemnity “equal to half” of that for the Presidents of the Commission. In short, 630 euros and change.

The commissioner of the Chamber Paolo Trancassini (FdI) explains that the indemnity has been introduced «without foreseeing any increase in spending for the House budget of deputies, not even a cent”. But it will be “taken from the contribution that is paid to the parliamentary groups”. Silvestri takes the credit for it: «Thanks to the commitment of the M5S we have avoided expenses borne by the Italians. The alternative proposal, which we firmly opposed, provided for costs to be borne by the Chamber and therefore by the citizens”.

The resolution reads that from 2024, the “office indemnity” chapter will be “increased by 267,230.40 euros per year”. Coverage will be provided with a “corresponding reduction in the allocation of the chapter Contribution to parliamentary groups”.
