Giovanni Azzone, 61, former rector of the Milan Polytechnic is the new president of Fondazione Cariplo, a shareholder of Intesa Sanpaolo. After being co-opted on April 28 among the new members of the Central Charity Commission, it unanimously designated him at the top for the next four years; «Fondazione Cariplo is an institution that in these more than 30 years, with its action and its rigorous method, has created a modern philanthropy, in step with the times, with a dutiful look at our territories and, at the same time, a comparison internationally», acknowledged Azzone, who succeeds Giovanni Fosti. «We will continue in the wake of this action, working to strengthen our communities, supporting the development of territories and the reduction of inequalities, together with the institutions and thanks to the skills of board members and management promised Azzone. We are facing new and complex challenges, which require us to operate in a timely and coordinated manner, as Fondazione Cariplo was already able to do during the pandemic emergency. In this challenge, we can count on the formidable passion and expertise that the people who work for Third Sector entities bring to bear every day; the operators of non-profit organizations, the volunteers, are fundamental for the realization of the projects and the maintenance of our communities».

The Central Charity Commission then completed the formation of the board: in addition to the president and the reconfirmation of the two vice-presidents Claudia Sorlini and Valeria Negrini and of the directors Enrico Lironi and Davide Maggi, Renata Codello and Emanuele Carluccio joined the board. The board of statutory auditors will include Massimo Parrinello, Laura Acquadro and Andrea Bignami. Who is

Giovanni Azzone is the fifth president in the history of the Cariplo Foundation. Before him they succeeded: Roberto Mazzotta from December 1991 to February 1996; Ottorino Beltrami, from March 1996 to February 1997; Giuseppe Guzzetti, from 5 February 1997 to May 2019; Giovanni Fosti from May 2019 to today. He taught business and strategic decisions at the Politecnico di Milano, where he was rector from 2010 to 2016; he is number one of Ifom, the molecular oncology research institute of the AIRC Foundation for cancer research and director of the Milan Conservatory. Member of the Ethics Committee of AssoCunsult-Confindustria, he sat on the board of the Milan Triennale and of the Airc, the Association for Cancer Research; he has held various positions for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, for the Ministry of Economy and Finance, for ISTAT and for the Lombardy Region. He was also President of the Community Foundation of Milan, a philanthropic garrison for the city promoted by the Cariplo Foundation in 2018.
