Cards, it’s a clash in the Calabrian Democratic Party. Cuperlo accuses: “Registrations doubled in 48 hours”

It is a tussle in the Calabrian Pd, for which the road to the congress becomes more bumpy and bumpy. Gianni Cuperlo, candidate for the secretariat, denounces the doubling of registrations in the province of Cosenza in 48 hours, 2000 more members in just one night. And the same would have occurred in Vibo Valentia and in the Reggio area. The presidents of the provincial guarantee commissions (Michele Drosi, Giuseppe Mazzuca and Giuseppe Panetta) claim the regularity of the operations, declaring that Cuperlo’s suspicions are unfounded, or rather “do not correspond to the reality of the facts”. If anything, they reply, “they seem to have the sole objective of creating alarmism and poisoning the climate”.
The party examines the registrations
“Everything is taking place in the name of transparency”, according to the regional secretary Nicola Irto, who points out that “in Calabria the enrollment is lower than in 2021”, in line with the national figure. “All registrations are being examined by the national commission – reassures Andrea Giorgis, coordinator of the Cuperlo motion and member of the national congress commission – and no action will be taken in the event of ascertained irregularities”. For example, it will check if there are more than three registrations made with the same payment method. The membership regulation prevents this (art.7).
The veto to Mario Oliverio
While the number of members increases, however, vetoes also increase: Mario Oliverio, former president of the Calabria Region, with a long history within the Democratic Party, indeed, from the PCI onwards, is currently among the great excluded. No card for him. The question, raised by the Cuperlo motion, is rather intricate. The party makes it a bureaucratic problem: in 2021, Mario Oliverio presented himself to the regional elections with his own list because the Democratic Party had rejected his candidacy. A case envisaged and sanctioned by article 4, paragraphs 9 and 10, of the national statute, which denies membership to those who have run for office in the current year and in the previous year on alternative lists to the Democratic Party or in any case not authorized by the Pd. Oliverio points out that “at the time he didn’t have any cards, since the Democratic Party in Calabria was a police station and had not activated memberships”. It should also be emphasized that, considering that we are in 2023, the terms would also have expired.
Cuperlo and the exclusion of Oliverio
The problem is evidently political and it is Gianni Cuperlo who is asking it more than Oliverio, who in view of the congress has asked the former president of the Region to support him on the territory. A commitment that Mario Oliverio honored with enthusiasm. «I recognize Cuperlo’s political qualities, his passion, his cultural depth and for this reason I accepted his invitation to join the constituent phase of a new Democratic Party. New?, I wonder. The reality seems to me that old methods of closure, hostile attitudes and personalistic concerns continue to emerge, frankly unjustified”.
Oliverio, «There’s no point in juggling responsibilities»
It is always Giorgis who explains how the party will now proceed towards Oliverio: “Since Oliverio is joining a new phase, the regional guarantee commission chaired by Girolamo De Maria will express his appeal, then the national one led by Silvia Velo”. Just one detail: Oliverio hasn’t presented any appeal «and I don’t even intend to do so – he categorically declares – The political issues must be faced openly and not, as they are doing, by juggling responsibilities. Are we or aren’t we on the eve of a constituent congress?».
