The car market in Western Europe (EU+EFTA+UK) continues to grow. In May in the area – according to data from Acea, the association of European manufacturers – 1,121,644 cars were registered, with an increase of 18.2% on May 2022. The final balance for the first five months of the year closes with 5,323,630 registrations and therefore with a growth of 17.4% over the period January-May 2022.

Stellantis

The Stellantis group registered 190,688 cars on the Western European car market (EU + EFTA + United Kingdom), 0.5% less than in the same month in 2022. The share is 17% compared to 20, 2%. In the first five months of the year, the group sold 935,080 cars, 7.2% more than the same period last year with the share falling from 19.2% to 17.6%. In detail, Peugeot rose by 10.6%, Fiat fell by 22.8%, Alfa Romeo leapt by 95.3%.

The other brands

Among the other major automakers, Volkswagen recorded an increase in registrations in May of 20.2% (289,451 vehicles), Renault of 35.5% (110,549), BMW of 24.8% (84,781). Toyota also rose by 8.4% (74,604) and Volvo (+39.9%). Honda (-40.7%) and Mistubishi (-27.7%) decreased significantly.

The electric boom

The updated data show a countertrend compared to the first part of last year when the drop was double-digit compared to 2021. Leafing through the latest Acea bulletin, it can be seen that in Italy there were 149,373 cars registered in May, in up 23% on the same month a year earlier. The electric car segment also leapt with a European market share ranging from 9.6 to 13.8%. Strengthened by the record sales of Tesla which in May marks +1,920.5%, with 29,600 cars registered (against 1,465 in May 2021).
