Can Netanyahu really bring gas to Italy?

Benjamin Netanyahu is in Italy for a three-day visit which will serve to strengthen bilateral ties with the G7 member physically closest to Israel. “I would like to see greater economic cooperation between our two countries,” Netanyahu said in an interview with La Repubblica, emphasizing the role of natural gas. “We have a lot of it, and I would like to discuss how to get it to Italy to support your economy”. In the last year, Italy has successfully managed to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, reversing the geography of imports: if before the flows came mainly from the east, now they come more from the south, with a preponderant role of Algeria destined to enrich itself with other suppliers. In the last ten years, numerous – in some cases enormous – offshore fields have been discovered in the eastern Mediterranean between the waters separating Egypt, Cyprus, Israel and Lebanon.
