Boeing slows down supplies of 787: «Defects in a component»

Boeing will delay deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner after discovering a defective component in recent days. Yet another setback as the aircraft manufacturer works to meet the increase in demand for its long-range aircraft, whose fuselage in synthetic materials is produced in the Leonardo plant in Grottaglie. The flaw could affect about 90 already-built Dreamliners that have not yet been delivered, Boeing said, as well as a handful of planes on the final assembly line in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Each plane will be inspected for improperly sized shims inside the horizontal stabilizer, a small wing attached to the plane’s tail. The issue has rattled investors who have previously tolerated a number of the US manufacturer’s production issues . Boeing has had to halt shipments of Dreamliners for nearly two years and is still trying to resolve a supplier defect affecting hundreds of 737 Max jets.
Just last week, CEO Dave Calhoun said that, with suppliers, the difficulties are “less and less”. Shares of Boeing recoiled on the news, closing 0.7% lower in New York. The new 787 inspections and repairs will likely also slow down Boeing’s effort to purge undelivered airplanes from its inventory. In addition, delivery delays could exacerbate a shortage of new aircraft during the busy summer travel season as airlines try to keep up with the post-pandemic travel surge.
