A way to “interrupt an unauthorized event”, but above all to send a clear signal on the intentions of the government and in particular of the Minister of the Interior. “Firmness and rigor”, this is the message that the owner of the Interior Ministry Matteo Piantedosi wants to launch.

The timing has also already been planned. While the police will try to enter the shed which is located north of the city, Piantedosi himself will bring to the council of ministers a decree law that provides for the seizure and confiscation of all the means used for this type of gatherings – by trucks. to music equipment – but also penalties and Daspo for the participants. It is his first official act, the measure that marks the line: to intervene when things happen, or even before.

It was agreed with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and shared with Lega leader Matteo Salvini, who had indicated him to lead the Interior Ministry when he understood that he would never be able to return. It was decided “in the sign of a discontinuity” that Piantedosi intends to mark as has already been seen with respect to NGO ships loaded with migrants and street demonstrations.

They have called him “the iron prefect”, even though he keeps repeating that “this is not the role I want to have, because my history and my activity have always been characterized by actions that guarantee respect for legality and this is the perimeter in which I will continue to move, respecting all the rights, even of those who protest, as long as they do so in a peaceful manner “. But the interventionist attitude it has always characterized it and it seems difficult for it to change right now.

Illegal gatherings

We start from Modena, but the measure that will be launched today by the Council of Ministers will affect everyone unauthorized gatherings. In August 2021, when a rave was organized in the province of Viterbo, the police were surprised by the arrival of at least 20,000 people and in the end it was decided not to intervene. In her briefing to the Chamber, the then Minister Luciana Lamorgese explained that “for the meeting that was held between 13 and 19 August, force action was contraindicated because the evacuation of the area with the use of hydrants and tear gas would have created risks for public order and health, therefore, given the high number of people and the presence of children, a dissuasive activity was deemed appropriate “. An attitude that Piantedosi does not shareas he demonstrated yesterday by asking the prefect of Modena and above all the police chief Lamberto Giannini “immediate action to stop the event”.

If the approval of the rules that impose the seizure of vehicles and equipment is taken for granted, as well as the Daspo and the other sanctions for the participants, the part concerning preventive interceptions is more controversial. A year ago the provision developed at the Interior Ministry was blocked due to the perplexities of the Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia regarding the ability to intercept chats on messaging channels and then the users of those who organize this type of gatherings. Now the Keeper of the Seals Carlo Nordio will have to evaluate whether this preventive activity can be included in the decree.

The ships of the NGOs

A new decree will not be needed, but the decisions to be taken on the landing of ships loaded with migrants will also have to be agreed today in the government. On 26 October, Piantedosi sent a directive to the heads of the Police Forces and the Port Authority to inform them that with two verbal notes the Farnesina had communicated to Norway and Germany, flag states of Ocean Viking and Humanity 1, that the activity of the two ships is not “in line with the spirit of the European and Italian rules on border security and control and the fight against illegal immigration”.
