Autonomy divides Salvini and Meloni. The Northern League: "Important reform". But the premier doesn't even mention it

Matthew Salvini he just mentions it. Giorgia Melonihowever, he doesn’t even talk about it. For the premier, autonomy – much desired by the League – is not even included in the list of good intentions for next year. “There are major reforms to be made. Taxes, bureaucracy, justice, presidentialism. We are already working on all these matters, because we will not waste a day of the time we have,” Meloni said in the weekly social column ‘Giorgia’s notes’. So four priorities. A fifth is missing: the one that for the Northern League – whether secessionist or sovereignist – represents the mother of all reforms.

Differentiated autonomy for the Regions: what is the reform proposed by Calderoli?

by Giovanna Casadio

“Bravo to Minister Calderoli, who, as per the centre-right’s electoral program, is working on the autonomy project and has already sent an ad hoc, in-depth and shared bill to the Prime Minister. This is an important reform, foreseen for some time by the Constitution , which will produce benefits from South to North by enhancing local authorities and bringing efficiency, savings and better services for citizens”, Matteo Salvini wrote in a note shortly before the start of Meloni’s social appointment. A message that, evidently, was not received by the premier. Which she preferred to talk about ‘her’ reform and not that of the Northern League: presidentialism, in fact. Reform that in the note issued by the infrastructure minister finds space only at the end: “We are also determined to implement Presidentialism, another important reform that will have different times because it starts from scratch” added the secretary.

Differentiated autonomy is a reform dear to Salvini as to the nostalgics of the old Carroccio, the same ones who have recently been pressing the secretary’s leadership by questioning the sovereignty turn decided by the leader since he has been at the helm of the party. Here, for Salvini, completing the process of differentiated autonomy is above all a question of survival, rather than a good resolution for the year to come. This is demonstrated by the acceleration of the Northern League colonel and minister for regional affairs Robert Calderoliwho just yesterday delivered the bill on autonomy to the council of ministers, as if to warn his majority colleagues – including the premier – about the importance that the measure has for the Carroccio.
