Auto, EU agreement on the stop to polluting cars from 2035

Agreement between Eurocamera, EU Council and Commission – the so-called trilogue – on cutting polluting emissions for cars and vans starting from 2035. The agreement was reached after four hours of discussion and certifies that, starting from 2035, they will not be allowed in the new internal combustion car market, that is petrol, diesel and methane. The agreement, in fact, is the final one. The text, which is part of the Fit for 55 package, must however pass through the re-approval of the Eurochamber Plenary before entering into force.
The final text should indicate -15% Co2 emissions reduction targets for 2025 and -55% for cars; -50% for vans for 2030, compared to 2021 values.
An exemption should be included for ‘niche’ manufacturers or those producing fewer than 10,000 vehicles per year, allowing them to be equipped with a combustion engine until 2036. This clause, sometimes referred to as the ‘Ferrari amendment’, will benefit especially of luxury brands. Among the points open in the negotiations also the position of hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels, the creation of a transition fund to help the automotive sector in the transition to electric.
